Congratulations! You've just received a body piercing by a trained professional who cleaned and disinfected the piercing, the instruments and jewlery, and used sterile needles. Now it is up to you to take appropriate care of your piercing during the critical healing period. It is most important that a new piercing be CLEANED TWO OR THREE TIMES EACH DAY during the first critical week to one month.Use appropriate cleanser suggested below for best results on your specific piercing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TOUCH OR MOVE THE JEWELRY until you have cleaned your hands thoroughly, AND the entrance holes to the piercing. The purpose of cleaning the pierced area BEFORE attempting to move jewlery is to remove all matter (mostly lymph and other dried body fluids) that collect on the jewelry and the piercing during the healing period. Infection or irritation of a new piercing generally occurs because crusty matter was forced into the piercing. Body fluids are sticky and attract airborne or other bacteria that can infect your new piercing. After cleaning, blot piercing and jewelry dry with clean tissue and apply a small dab of STERILE LUBRICANT (ointments like Neosporin, Bacitracin, Triple Antibiotic, etc.) to jewelry at exit holes. This will ease healing and your body's adjustment to jewelry during the first days of healing. CAUTION: ointments DO NOT clean or disinfect a piercing! They are only a safe lubricant and NOT a substitute for cleaning with Bactine, antibacterial or castile soap. TO SPEED HEALING, discontinue ointment after a week; it will slow the healing process. After the initial adjustment period, piercings heal faster when dry and clean. Also, some piecings find that daily use of zinc supplement (50mg.tablet) speeds healing or the application of vitamin E directly on the piercing after it has been cleaned. Oral contact with a new piercing, or handling with unclean hands, can cause infection and should be avoided. While genital piercings do not prohibit sex during the healing process, in the interests of good hygiene, it is a good idea ot use a rubber or other barrier to minimize infection. Also a new piercing should not be subjected to heavy abuse during the healing process. If a local infection should occur (indicated by redness, swelling, itching, pus), try this IMMEDIATE FIRST AID: thoroughly work in a generous quantity of BETADINE TOPICAL ANTICEPTIC solution (not skin cleanser) If the solution stings, you've reached the minor local infection. If the condition persists with this continued treatment, contact your piercing professional or local doctor. DO NOT use alcohol OR peroxide, or associated products!! They can severely dry and burn a piercing, as well as kill the GOOD GERMS! The good germs you need, they kill the bad germs. By overcleaning, you may be causing more harm than good! DO NOT touch your piercing with unwashed hands!! UPPER BODY PIERCINGS Ears, Septum, Nose, Eyebrow, nostrils, etc: Clean piercing and jewelry two or three times a day with liberal amount of BACTINE solution on a clean Q-tip. DO NOT TOUCH PIERCINGS OR JEWELRY WITH FINGERS. If fingers are used, make sure you have washed the thoroughly! Use of stronger solutions (like those suggested for lower body) could irritate and cause healing problems! Tongues, lips, and cheeks: Requires special aftercare. May swell the first 24-48 hrs. Rinse mouth frequently (every hour or two) with Listerine, Peridex, or similar antibacterial mouthwash, drink lots of cold fluids and use ice to minimize swelling. Use GLY-OXIDE on the piercing, both sides, several times per day. May need to continue for four to six weeks, avoid oral contact. Flushing a piercing with Sterile Saline Solution (like the kind you use in contact lenses) IS EXCELLENT for piercing cleaning and maintanance! MID & LOWER BODY PIERCINGS Nipples, Navels, Male & Female Genital Piercings, etc: Clean two ot three times a day with antibacterial soap(dial, softsoap, Lever 2000 etc. active ingrediant Triclosan). Easiest to clean AFTER daily shower or bath (remember bath water and regular soap is NOT CLEAN!). First apply bacterial cleanser to hands and scrub so they are clean and you can touch your piercing. Rinse hands and work up a lather with a second application of cleanser. Gently scrub jewelry and piercing until you are certain ALL crusty matter is removed. Move jewelry slightly so solution will clean the inside of the piercing too. RINSE CLEANSER away with fresh water when done. For cleaning without shower or bath, use a small cup of water with a small quantity of cleanser (dilute). Clean piercing and jewelry with a clean Q-Tip. DO NOT touch! Flushing a piercing with Sterile Saline Solution (like the kind you use in contact lenses) IS EXCELLENT for piercing cleaning and maintanance. After the initial healing period, you can clean daily with regular soap. Continue to NOT touch your piercings with your hands! Hands have germs! Even though a piercing is healed, it can STILL get infected! It is UP TO YOU TO MAINTAIN YOUR PIERCING!
